Trip date: October 4, 2015 A small group of us decided to check out the golden larches in Manning Park last weekend and went for the summit of Frosty Mountain. It was my first time exploring the golden larches in the Fall and I was pretty surprised to see dozens and dozens of people in the meadows and at the top. The views were well worth the crowds of people. You have the option of starting and/or ending at either Lightning Lakes or Windy Joe via the Similkameen…

September 4-5, 2015 It’s good to be back in the BC mountains!! After considering a few factors: over 1.5 months of no hiking (for me) and currently fighting off a cold (me again), Ryan and I decided to ease back into the mountains by going for a mellow backpacking trip this September long weekend. Our original plan was to spend 3-4 days in the Shulaps range, but with the recent storm, which brought a cumulative 50cm of snow in the alpine and well below treeline, we thought ‘heck,…

Trip Date: July 17-18, 2015 Ryan and I checked out the Blowdown area, including Kidney Lakes & Gotcha Peak. We set up camp at Blowdown Lake and made our way around. Stats: Kidney Lakes: Elevation gain: 164m Distance: 2.94km

Trip date: June 20, 2015 On the June solstice, one year ago, I summited Mt. Kilimanjaro. In the week leading up to my summit anniversary, I found myself flipping through pictures and re-reading my trip report. With mixed emotions, I have been quietly celebrating. Why the mixed emotions? Reflecting on the past year, I’m not sure I’ve done anything significant. While I have been on a number of amazing hikes, they have been a means to an end; I’m training to move faster and learning to move more…

The 10 (+6) Essentials for Type 1 Diabetics in the Backcountry June 4, 2015  •  Type 1 Diabetes  •  Ashika Parsad any of us adore spending time in the mountains, whether on a multi-day trek, a long day trip, or a short hike. While I try to pack as lightly and efficiently as possible, there are a few things I will not leave home without to make sure I’m prepared for unforeseen situations. Generally, no one plans to have a ‘bad’ day. The weather forecast shows sun, you make…

Scramble to Evans Peak Trip date: May 9, 2015  •  Golden Ears Provincial Park  •  Ashika Parsad Ryan and I were keen on getting some elevation in our legs last Saturday, we decided to check out Evans Peak in the Golden Ears Provincial Park. This was Skeena’s first scramble. History on Evans Peak, Evans Valley, and Evans Creek (taken from a memorial plaque near the summit): Evans Peak was named after Mr. Lesley Evans and his son John. Lesley (known and respected in the community) and John went missing in…

Date: Saturday, April 18, 2015 Trip Report: Ryan and I hiked to Mt. Beautiful (aka. Eagle Peak). We ascended via Swan Falls trail and descended via Lindsay Lake trail. The Eagle Ridge trail system consists of the Lindsay Lake Loop, Swan Falls Loop, and Dilly Dally Loop; it is named after its builder, Halvor Lunden. Lunden is a trail-building pioneer and he has contributed to our community by building and maintaining various hiking and biking trails throughout the coast. Lunden had the original idea of building a trail…

After our recent failed attempt to Rohr Lake, Ryan and I decided we needed some spectacular views; we headed up Panorama Ridge in Garibaldi Provincial park this past weekend. There are a few route options to the ridge including: the Cheakamus Lake trailhead or the Rubble Creek parking lot. We started from the Rubble Creek parking lot and ascended the western ridge via the ‘old’ route (instead of the standard trail up the northern ridge on the eastern side). Rubble Creek to Taylor Meadows We had an early start at the…
