When we set off for Rohr Lake last Saturday, given the weather, I was expecting skiers and snowshoers all over the trail; I was surprised when we didn’t run in to anyone all day. Is Rohr that underrated? The plan was to take our time up the trail, squeeze in as many blood sugar checks as possible, and consistently eat carbs throughout the day. I was playing around with my basal rate (hourly insulin intake) and I was trying out a few new sources of carbs including: Gu…

…but, be sure to check current conditions before heading up to Manning Park. We lucked out with a well-packed trail made by a group of 8+ snowshoers who headed up in the morning, just before us. We spend the majority of our time planning, scheduling and anticipating the upcoming week, month, year. We’re tied to our phones, emails, and daily correspondence from our work and personal lives. It’s kinda nice when we can take a break from all the planning and foreshadowing, drive away from the concrete jungle and into a…

Hi, happy New Year! I don’t have much experience in backcountry travel during winter months. Normally, when the hiking season ends, I hibernate until spring. Last winter, I snowshoed a little bit more than the previous year and this winter, I plan to continue to build my stoke for the season. With a quiet shoulder season, we were aching to get outdoors. On Jan 1, 2015, Ryan and I thought to celebrate the New Year by knocking an item off of our to-hike list: catching a sunset from Mt. Seymour. Snowshoes were…

Last month marked the 20th anniversary of my type 1 diabetes diagnosis. To be honest, the specific date of diagnosis is lost to me; I remember it was close to Halloween because the BC Children’s Hospital was fully decorated. I’ve never really celebrated the day. Rather, I acknowledge another year has passed and I’ve been able to continue living as best I can with type 1.  Looking back on the last twenty years (or just the past year alone) makes me realize I’ve come a very long way….

I wanted to get one last Shulaps trip under our belts before the hiking season was over. As far as I know, Thanksgiving weekend is normally the wrap-up for hiking in the Shulaps. Marshall Lake locals start winterizing their cabins, hunting season is underway, and within a week or two, the mountains get their first dusting of snow. We ducked out of Vancouver on Friday night and made our way to Marshall Lake via the Duffey. We arrived late at the campgrounds on the north end of the lake and set up…

A few weeks ago, I went on a solo hike up the east summit of Frosty Mountain in Manning Park. This was my first hike within the park; the views were well worth the drive and I’ll definitely be back. I parked at the Lightning Lakes day lot and I was on the trail a little before 10:00am. I hiked ~23km and gained ~1250m over 7 hours and 20 mins, including short breaks on the way up and an hour long break at the top. I didn’t see…

Sometimes, in life, you just need to jump in a heli and fly to a tranquil lake, rope up and hike on a glacier, sit in a canoe and enjoy the ride while your partner does 68% of the work, take arbitrary selfies while sun-tanning, capture the sunset with a loved one, indulge in (impressive) pancake breakfasts and steak dinners, and jump back in a heli and fly out. This is a very special place. Though very close to home, its location and inaccessibility amplifies its beauty and seclusion. During the August…

After weeks of nagging Ryan about wanting to learn more technical skills in terms of hiking, scrambling, and mountaineering, he finally took me out. This is one of those hikes I should have done long, long ago, but never really got around to doing; nor was I too interested in the high traffic trails. I made a failed attempt at snowshoeing in the area years ago, but didn’t make it back until this trip. I was surprised at how beautiful it was – this seems to be happening…
